Golf team delivers first win with new coach

IVCC’s men’s golf team celebrated their first win of the season – and first under new coach Patrick Guilfoyle – after capturing first and third places overall in the Governors State University Fall Tune-Up Tournament in Frankfort on Sept. 6.

Even a morning rain that delayed tee times couldn’t dampen the teams’ spirit, Guilfoyle said. “There was so much to be proud of from all of the players today. Even with a 2-hour rain delay and really windy conditions, they had good energy and really dialed in quickly. They limited the big numbers and it showed! I think having to focus more on the conditions and focus on placement over aggression really helped.”

IVCC Team Purple topped the seven-team field, shooting a 312. They were led by Drake Stoudt and Jonathon Cooper, who both shot 75 and who each medaled individually with a T3 finish. Other scorers were Dylan Cartwright with a 78 and Carter Fenza with an 84.

IVCC Team Grey wasn’t far behind, finishing third with a team total of 321, just 4 points out of second place. Team Grey was led by Jake Delaney, who shot a solid 77, and Connor Noramczyk, who shot his career-college best of 79. Other scorers for the Grey team were Grant Plym with an 82 and Matt Cook with an 83.

“Drake once again showed stability for us, and Jon stepped up from last week. Dylan posted in the 70s to give us a great chance. Jake Delaney, once again, showed IVCC’s great depth by performing as the 1 guy for the second team today. Connor also shot in the 70s for the first time as an Eagle,” Guilfoyle said.

“It feels amazing to get that first win off the team’s back. We joked about going 1-2 today during the delay, and being so close to doing it makes us excited to keep that momentum going,” the coach said.

It was also Guilfoyle’s first win as Eagles coach. “This win means a lot, not only to me as a coach, but more importantly to them as a team. It is a memory they get to look back on for a really long time and see the trophy in the case that future teams and players will see for years to come!”
