Jazz, Wind ensembles to perform
Illinois Valley Community College’s Jazz and Wind ensembles will perform in separate concerts on Tuesday, March 3, and Thursday, March 5, in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.
Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. and there is no admission charge. The Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Brandon Czubachowski, while the Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Phil Whaley.
The Jazz Ensemble features music from Sigmund and Gray, Neal Hefti, Les Brown, Gordin Goodwin, Denis DiBlasio and Stevie Wonder. Selections include “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” “Count Bubba,” “Hit and Run,” and “I Wish.”
Featured soloists are Evan Farrell on piano, Dave Vieitez and Laurie Smudzinski on trumpet, Diane Nelson on tenor sax, Abby Dominus on trombone, and Doreen Vieitez on alto sax.
The Wind Ensemble will perform music by Debussy, Alfred Reed, Julius Fucik, Franz von Suppe, and John Barnes Chance.
In addition to Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz,” other selections include “The Engulfed Cathedral,” “First Suite for Band,” “Florentiner (Grande Marcia Italiano),” “Light Calvary Overture,” and “Variations on a Korean Folk Song.”
Both ensembles include IVCC students, area music educators, area high school students, and community members.
