IVCC to welcome new students with Eagles Launch

JULY 30, 2025

Illinois Valley Community College’s convocation event has a new look, a new name, and a sharper focus.

The kickoff event that traditionally welcomes new students to campus is now Eagles Launch and is designed to acclimate registered students to campus. The event is scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, August 15, on the Oglesby campus.

Eagles Launch will begin in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre and be followed by breakout sessions on several topics, including textbooks, financial aid, support resources, online security, study abroad programs, study skills, personal organization, effective communication with instructors, college culture and making connections to peers and others on campus. Students also will get answers to their campus technology questions and log-in help.

The agenda was developed with input from employees and students. Additionally, it was modeled after events adopted by other community colleges, explained Crystal Credi, Dean of Student Success.

“We were looking for options to be sure students have the tools to be successful in their first semester at IVCC,” she said. “We developed some interesting ways for students to engage and get information in a fun manner.”

Associate Director of Retention Ashlee Fitzpatrick said the activity is loosely structured but still delivers important information. “Students do not necessarily have to attend every session. They can drop in to whatever fits their needs.”

Lawn games, snacks and a scavenger hunt continue throughout the afternoon. The scavenger hunt introduces students to campus and each participant will receive a coupon for a free pretzel. Didoughs will be serving on site, and Sno Cones also will be available.

Student Government members will be on hand to distribute student planners and promote campus activities such as Spirit Day. “Eagles Launch is all about getting students prepared for the fun that is IVCC. The College is more than just classes; it is a community!” Credi said.
