August 2018 Board Report

Following a public hearing, the Illinois Valley Community College board Thursday approved a $34 million budget for fiscal 2019.

Anticipated revenue of $31.6 million represents a 1.3 percent increase over the 2018 budget and $34.4 million in expenditures marks an 8 percent increase over the previous year’s budget.

The operating budget is structurally balanced with revenues up 2.4 percent to $21.8 million and expenditures up 3.2 percent to $22.1 million.

The board also approved:

  • Purchase of OSHA safety training classes with 2B Safe of East Moline for $25,000, supervisor and leadership development training classes from Riffle for $20,000 and IT and business solutions training from Omnikron for $200,000.
  • Renewal of annual IT maintenance services with CDW-G for $25,454; Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology, $18,000; iFiber, $14,400; Omni Update, $14,000; and Toad Code, $25,000.
  • Purchase of Nebraska Book Company software maintenance for $15,012.
  • Payment of Illinois Community College Trustees Association dues of $11,550. ICCTA provides legislative advocacy and organizes lobby days in Springfield and Washington, D.C., among other services. IVCC board chair Jane Goetz will serve as the ICCTA executive committee’s Northwest Regional Chair this year.
  • The $51,205 bid of Universal Asphalt and Excavating of La Salle for drainage improvements to the north drive and south gym and the $9,136 bid of Illinois Valley Excavating of Peru to address drainage issues between the track and baseball diamond south of campus.
  • Property/casualty and workers’ compensation insurance from Corkill Insurance of Elk Grove Village for $224,995.
  • A three-year managed print services contract with COTG of Bolingbrook for $20,610 annually.
  • Printing and mailing of an “Enrollment Driver” marketing magazine for distribution across the district for $10,660 per issue.
  • An intergovernmental agreement with Ottawa for its new Route 71 TIF.

Board members learned:

  • Julia “Kathy” Hart has been hired as collection development and access librarian and Disability Services administrative assistant Kirsten Dorwart has resigned to accept a full-time position at Ottawa High School.
  • Speakers at Tuesday’s New Student Convocation included distinguished alumnus Dr. Caitlin Rinker, an Ottawa veterinarian, 2018 teaching excellence award winner Amanda Cook Fesperman, student trustee Joseph Marenda, Student Government President Xavier Braboy and IVCC officials.
  • President Jerry Corcoran credited IVCC’s Cheryl Roelfsema and Scott Curley, DKA architects Dominick Demonica and Brett Loehmann and Vanguard contractors Matt Balagna and Daric Rademacher for the “extraordinary upgrades” completed this summer within the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.
  • Walter Durley and Hazel Marie Boyle will be honored posthumously for the bequest that helped finance the Cultural Centre enhancements in a ceremony at noon Monday, Oct. 15.
    “Their generous bequest of approximately $630,000 was used for new lighting, seating, wall coverings, and ADA-accessibility upgrades. When you add that to the new sound system, I believe we have one of the premier venues for musical and theatrical performances in our eight-county district,” said Corcoran.
  • IVCC’s Continuing Education Center hosted nearly 300 area youth for STEAM-related camps this summer. The weeklong Summer Ed’Venture camp attracted 88 students and 18 other camps attracted over 200.
