Faculty Rights Responsibilities
Providing equal access to all students at Illinois Valley Community College is a shared responsibility. The Center for Accessibility and Neurodiversity (CAN) staff strives to level the playing field by engaging in an interactive process with each student, determining functional limitations based on disability status, and providing reasonable accommodations when appropriate, on a case-by-case basis. Faculty play an important role in reviewing and implementing approved accommodation requests. Information regarding faculty rights and responsibilities is included below.
Faculty Have the Right To:
- Maintain academic standards for courses and hold all students to the same course requirements and grading standards
- Request notification in the form of an accommodation letter of a student’s need for accommodations when the student requests them due to a disability or learning difference
- Be presented with accommodation requests in a timely manner; students are required to provide at least 48 hours’ notice of the need for testing accommodations
- Seek clarification about a student’s accommodations or learning style; faculty do not have the right to ask about disability status or request evidence of disability
- Refuse accommodations that have been requested without following CAN’s formal accommodation process
- Expect that students follow IVCC’s Code of Conduct
Faculty Have the Responsibility To:
- Ensure that all instructional materials are accessible
- Provide reasonable accommodations in a timely manner when a student presents a formal letter of accommodation from CAN
- Refer any student requesting accommodations to CAN
- Include information regarding CAN via a Syllabus Statement on the CAN webpage
- Assist in setting up testing accommodations as directed in the accommodation letter when given the appropriate notice of 48 hours by students
- Maintain confidentiality of a student’s disability-related issues
- Communicate with the CAN Coordinator when questions regarding accommodations arise
