Remembering What You Read: SQ4R and S-RUN-R
SQ4R
SQ4R stands for the six-step process students should use to help them remember
what they have read.
Survey
Look over (skim) the books content before reading (ex. Contents page, author’s notes
to student, Chapter outlines, sidebars and additional notes specific to
each chapter)
Question
Pose a question that pertains to the paragraph heading (ex. “Why was the
women’s suffragette movement so important?”)
Read
Actively read each passage thoroughly
Record
Write page numbers down to help you help locate the answers to your questions. Highlight passages, main ideas and quotes.
Recite
Repeat aloud the important information from the passage you have just read
Review
Go over your notes and re-read the chapter

Survey
Skim through the chapter, pay attention to the titles and important information
Read
Do just that…read!
Underline
Read the paragraph first then go back and highlight key information you think is important for review
Notes
Put the underline/highlighted information in your own words
Review
Go back over the information from your reading and notes
