Free events for Women's History Month

Illinois Valley Community College has several free brown bag lunch Women’s History Month events in March under the theme “Visionary Women: Champions of Peace and Nonviolence.”

An IVCC Student Art and Literature Contest, sponsored by Sigma Kappa Delta and River Currents, will accept poetry, short stories, essays, pictures, paintings and other creative entries that feature women (or their contexts). Entries are due Monday, March 18 in-person or via email to kimberly_radekhall@ivcc.edu or tracy_lee@ivcc.edu with the subject line: WHM Contest.

Adjunct instructor Donna Stone and the Drama Mama Ensemble perform “Give Us the Vote! A Multimedia Readers’ Theatre” noon to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 19 in Room CTC124. Written and directed by Stone, the performance celebrates the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave women the right to vote in 1919. The ensemble produces shows on women’s issues.    

Instructor Dr. Kimberly Radek-Hall presents “Supreme Justice: Women Speaking Truth to (and against) Power” noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 25 in Room CTC124. Radek-Hall will discuss Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford who both testified against Supreme Court Justice nominees as well as why women often do not report sexual assault and harassment.

“A Panoply of Papers: Feminist Figures” is 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 27 in Room CTC124 and features IVCC students presenting researched papers honoring feminists whose persistence have improved women’s lives in constructive and often non-violent ways. Refreshments will be available courtesy of Students Advocating Gender Equality (SAGE). 

The final event is “Art and Poetry Appreciation: Remembering Mary Oliver” noon to 1 p.m. Friday, March 29 in Room CTC124. IVCC faculty, SKD and River Currents members will read and discuss the works of their favorite female poets, especially the late Mary Oliver. Art and Literature Contest winners will be announced, prizes awarded and the winning art read or displayed.
