Online Office Hours FAQ

Do I have to have my computer configured in a special way? 

Yes.  You will need a current release of the Java 2 Run Time Environment plug-in.  The plug in may be downloaded from www.java.com.  Uninstall existing Java plug-ins before installing a new version.

You should also enable Javascript in your browser.  In Internet Explorer go to:  Tools / Internet Options / Security Tab / Custom Level / Active Scripting/ check Enable.

And, allow Pop-ups: Tools / Internet Options / Privacy Tab / uncheck Block Pop-ups.  Also verify that pop-up blockers are disabled on any virus protection software running on your home computer.Megan

What is the last day in the semester for office hours?  Office hours will end as the finals schedule begins.

How do I know if/when my instructor has online office hours?  Office hours are posted on the instructor’s web site.

What if the instructor is not able to participate in online office hours for personal reasons?  Office hours cancelled due to personal reasons will be posted on the IVCC Course Cancellations page, http://www.ivcc.edu/cancellations/.

If the school is closed due to an emergency, will the instructor still hold office hours?  It is possible that the instructor will still be available, even if the school is closed.

If the regularly scheduled office hours fall on a scheduled break, will the instructor still hold office hours?  No, office hours will not be held.

If the regularly scheduled office hours are on a weekend, and there is a holiday, will the instructor still hold office hours?  No, office hours will not be held.

What if Blackboard is unavailable due to technical problems?  If Blackboard is unavailable, a message will be posted on the Known Technical Issues page,  http://www.ivcc.edu/its/students/KnownIssues.html.  No office hours will be held.

Can I speak to my instructor privately during online office hours?  You can use the Private Message feature to do so.

What if I have trouble getting into the session?  The staff at the Student Help Desk may be able to help you troubleshoot the problem over the phone (815-224-0318).  Always test out new tools in advance.
