English as a Second Language (ESL) Technology Nights at Ottawa Parkview Community Building

Martha_Vera tech page Martha Vera is an experienced ESL instructor and has been with the Adult Education Program at IVCC for several years. It is a well known fact that ESL classes frequently include students at different skill levels working in the same classroom.  Martha has taken this challenge a step further by incorporating technology into her classroom.  With the help of I-READ Adult Literacy volunteers, Anne Ruiz and Kathleen Kintz, ESL/GED instructor Joyce Loebach and ESL instructor Lorraine Jaimes each class begins with a break-out session according to the various student levels.  By rotating through the different stations within the class period, individual student needs are met using a variety of technological aids and classroom techniques.  One-to-one instruction, small group instruction, lap-top computers with appropriate level software, tape recorders with listening programs, textbooks and traditional instructional materials are all part of this learning environment.  This classroom is proving itself to be successful in simultaneously serving many diverse levels while enhancing the multi-level classroom experience.
