IVCC's I-READ program to conduct free tutor orientation

The I-READ Adult Literacy Program at Illinois Valley Community College will conduct its free summer volunteer tutor orientation and training sessions in June.

Prospective volunteers must have a desire to work with adult learners and be willing to tutor two-three hours each week. Teaching experience is not required to become a volunteer tutor.

Those interested in volunteering should attend the orientation session from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 10, in IVCC’s Adult Learning Center, Room E 323. Then, if they determine that the program fits their interests and abilities, they should plan to attend the following sessions: 1:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12, Tuesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 19. Observation in an adult learning lab is an additional training component.

After training, tutors are matched with learners age 16 or older who are reading or computing below the ninth-grade level or who need to improve their English language skills. Volunteers may choose to tutor in one-on-one sessions at a local library or at an adult learning lab at IVCC or at an extension site within the IVCC district.

Free online tutor training is another option for new volunteers whose schedules do not allow them to participate in the June sessions. New volunteer tutor training sessions also will be scheduled in the fall.

To register for volunteer tutor training or for information, contact Angela Dunlap, I-READ program manager, at 815.224.0372 or Chris Warren, I-READ program specialist, at 815.224.0345.
