What is Tech Prep?

Tech Prep, short for technical preparation, is a federal and state funded educational initiative. An outgrowth of the educational committee reports and the technology demands that emerged in the 1980s, the initiative targeted the "neglected majority" of students, the so-called "general" high school students who were not planning to attend college and who were not enrolled in vocational programs. The goal of the initiative was to provide those students with marketable skills for the 21st century. Responding to that challenge, the U.S. Congress funded the Tech Prep initiative through the Carl D. Perkins Act.

Tech Prep at IVCC

Since the early 1990s, IVCC has pioneered in developing Tech Prep programs at the community college level. IVCC’s Tech Prep team, winner of five Connections 2000 Awards from the Illinois State Board of Education, has attracted statewide, nationwide and international attention with its innovative projects:

Integrated Module Project

Making Industry Meaningful in College – Industry (MIMIC)

Making Industry Meaningful in College - Theatre

Day Care Camp, MIMIC - Service

In 2005, the National Science Foundation awarded IVCC a $230,000 grant to revise engineering, electronics and manufacturing programs around the capstone MIMIC project.

IVCC’s Tech Prep Team and the IVCC/SRAVTE Consortium

IVCC’s Tech Prep team is a part of the IVCC/SRAVTE Consortium.

The IVCC/SRAVTE Consortium

IVCC and the Starved Rock Associates for Vocational and Technical Education are partners in developing and implementing Tech Prep programs in the area high schools and at IVCC.

The IVCC/SRAVTE consortium is co-directed by the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs at IVCC and by the SRAVTE Executive Director. The SRAVTE Executive Director reports to a Board of Control composed of superintendents of all of the region’s high schools.

From federal and state funding, each school participating in the consortium receives a minigrant to develop and offer a Tech Prep program.

Focus of the IVCC/SRAVTE Consortium

When the IVCC/SRAVTE consortium was formed, in the 1991-92 school year, major emphasis was placed on inservice training for the high school and community college staff, including counselors and administrators. Since that time, the consortium has been able to concentrate more attention on

Cooperating with Education-to-Careers programs.

Developing partnerships with business and industry.

Encouraging work-based learning experiences including internships, job shadowing, cooperative education and mentoring.

Making students and parents more aware of Tech Prep programs and opportunities.

Working out articulation agreements to provide students with a smooth transition from high school to IVCC career programs.
