Scholarships

“The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”

The following is a list of scholarships offered by local colleges and universities. Visit the bottom of the page for a list of nation wide scholarships.

 

Note: Students applying through the Common Application have the opportunity to apply for All-USA Community College Academic Team, Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team, New Century Scholars, and All-State Academic Team scholarships. The fall deadline is December 2, 2013. For more information on these scholarships, visit scholarships.ptk.org.

DePaul University

Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship
Admission to DePaul University for the Fall term must be granted by the scholarship deadline of April 1 in order for a student's scholarship application to be considered. Consideration does not guarantee an award. A student must be transferring from a community college and entering a traditional undergraduate program at DePaul. A minimum transferrable 3.5 GPA and 30 semester credit hours are required at the time of admission to DePaul (the transferrable GPA and/or hours cannot be in progress and both measures are determined by DePaul). Proof of Phi Theta Kappa membership must be provided. A complete scholarship application must be on file by April 1st to be considered. Applications are available for downloading on DePaul's Web site at www.depaul.edu/scholarships. Students with previous bachelor's degrees or those entering in a term other than Fall are not eligible. Currently enrolled students are not eligible.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Phi Theta Kappa scholarships are offered to students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, and have earned a cumulative transfer grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application. Renewal of these scholarships requires full-time enrollment and the maintenance of the grade-point average needed for the academic scholarship awarded. The scholarship is valued at $1,000 and can be added to the Transfer or Music scholarship funds offered by the college. Students must provide official college transcripts confirming Phi Theta Kappa membership at the time of application to be considered for this award.

Transfer Achievement Scholarship
Scholarships range in value from $7,000 to $11,000 per year and require the maintenance of a 3.0 grade point average and full time enrollment. To be considered for an Achievement Scholarship students must have earned at least 32 semester hours of transferable college credit and a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.

These scholarships are for students interested in the 2007/2008 school year. Students interested in the Spring 2007 term should contact the Office of Admission.

Transfer Excellence Scholarship
Scholarships range in value from $11,000 to $16,000 per year and require the maintenance of a 3.25 grade point average and full time enrollment. Illinois State University

Community College Transfer/Phi Theta Kappa Recognition Scholarship
Scholarships are valued at $3,000, distributed in increments of $ 750.00 during the fall and spring semester for two years. A minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and an A.A. or A.S. degree is required to participate in the scholarship competition. Part-time students and students with previous bachelor's degrees are not eligible. A 500-word essay is required. Student must enroll immediately following two-year college to be eligible to compete for this scholarship.

Candidates must be admitted and first-time enrollees to Illinois State University. Qualifying students admitted by late February will be sent an invitation to apply in early March.

McKendree College in partnership with the Illinois Community College System Foundation will provide scholarships valued at $10,000 per year ($20,000 over two years) to two outstanding students from every community college in the state of Illinois. National-Louis University

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Phi Theta Kappa scholarship will be awarded to nine new recipients each academic year. $1,000 per term/maximum $4,000 per academic year for full-time students admitted with and maintaining a 3.5 GPA. $1,700 per term/maximum $6,800 per academic year for full-time students admitted with and maintaining a 3.75 GPA. Student must fill out a Phi Theta Kappa scholarship application and be a member in good standing. Student must have full admission to National-Louis University prior to initial enrollment. A minimum of 45 quarter hours/30 semester hours of accepted transferable college credit and transfer GPA of 3.5 or 3.75 at the point of admission. Student must enroll in at least 12-15 hours each term.

One partial tution plus $1300 scholarship. A minimum 3.5 GPA and 45 credit hours by February 1st are required. Part-time students and students with previous bachelor's degrees are not eligible. Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
$1,000 scholarship award for incoming transfer students with a minimum 3.5 GPA and 45 completed credit hours by February 1st. Students must also be admitted to NIU by February 1st. Part-time students and students with previous bachelor's degrees are not eligible.

Fall Scholarships:

 

Hites Scholarships

The Hites Transfer Scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement, engagement in college and community activities and leadership accomplishment of Phi Theta Kappa members preparing to transfer to senior institutions in pursuit of baccalaureate degrees. Members may begin applying for this scholarship in October and applications are due in early December each year. An independent team of judges reviews the applications to determine scholarship recipients. Phi Theta Kappa notifies students selected as Hites Scholars by June each year. Ten scholarships valued at $7500 are to be awarded. Must be on track to earning a bachelor's degree.

Guistwhite Scholarships

Scholarship awards totaling $100,000 annually are presented to Phi Theta Kappa members through the Guistwhite Scholarship Program. The awards are named in honor of Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his wife, Margaret. Dr. Guistwhite developed the first transfer scholarship designated exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members. Twenty qualifying students will receive scholarships of $5,000 each for completion of baccalaureate degrees. To be eligible, a student must attain a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA and must graduate with an associate’s degree during the academic year of application, and must be on track to earn a bachelor's degree.

Pathway to Completion Baccalaureate Scholarships

Students who apply for the Guistwhite Scholarship and are declared business majors will automatically be considered for a Pathway to Completion Baccalaureate Scholarship. The two top scoring applicants (who are not selected as Guistwhite Scholars) will each receive a $1,500 scholarship. Students must be enrolled a minimum of part-time in a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year college for the fall term in the year following their fall application. All-USA Academic Team Scholarships

 The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society. Twenty team members are named annually with each receiving a $2,500 scholarship, a total of $50,000 in scholarship awards. In addition to scholarships, team members are featured in the USA TODAY newspaper and presented at the annual President’s Breakfast held during the American Association of Community Colleges Annual Convention.

 

All-State Academic Teams

Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college presidents and community college state associations co-sponsor All-State Academic recognition programs in 38 states. Students nominated to the All-USA Academic Team are automatically named to the All-State Academic Team in participating states.

 

Senior Institution Transfer Scholarships

Phi Theta Kappa expends much time and effort into its program to secure scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa members planning to transfer to senior institutions. Nearly 600 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada offer more than $36 million in transfer scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members.

 

Community College Academic Team

Fifty students will be named Gold Scholars, each receiving $1,500 scholarships; fifty students will be named Silver Scholars, each receiving $1,250 scholarships; and fifty students will be named Bronze Scholars, each receiving $1,000 scholarships. A state may have multiple Gold, Silver or Bronze Scholars. The program awards $187,500 in scholarships annually. To be eligible for this program, students must submit an application for the All-USA Community College Academic Team and be selected as a nominee by their college. The application process opens in October and applications are due in early December each year.

 

Coca-Cola New Century Scholars

The student receiving the highest All-USA Community College Academic Team application score in each state is named a Coca-Cola New Century Scholar and represents his/her state at the annual Presidents Breakfast at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention. The program annually recognizes 52 Scholars with scholarships of $2,000 each, totaling $104,000 in awards. Each Scholar’s nominating institution also receives special recognition at the American Association of Community Colleges Convention. To be eligible for this program, students must submit an application for the All-USA Community College Academic Team and be selected as a nominee by their college. The application process opens in October and applications are due in early December each year.

 

 

Spring Scholarships:

The deadline to apply to these scholarships is April 30th.

Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships

The Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarships recognize the outstanding academic and leadership accomplishments of students who are enrolled in regionally accredited community college programs in registered nursing, respiratory care or emergency medical services. Phi Theta Kappa annually awards up to 20 scholarships of $2,500 each, a total of $50,000 in scholarships each year. Applicants must have completed 50 percent of their course work leading to the attainment of an associate degree by June in the year they apply for the scholarship. (Certificate students are not eligible to apply). Eligible students may begin applying for this scholarship in February and applications are due in April.

 

Leaders of Promise Scholarships

The program awards up to 200 scholarships of $1,000 each, a total of $200,000 in scholarships annually. Members may begin applying for this scholarship in February, and applications are due in April each year. An independent team of judges reviews the applications to determine scholarship recipients. Twenty-five scholarships are reserved for Society members who are active personnel or veterans of the U.S. military. Phi Theta Kappa notifies students selected as Leaders of Promise Scholars in August/September each year.

 

Pathway to Completion Associate Scholarships

Students who apply for Leaders of Promise Scholarships and are declared business majors will automatically be considered for a Pathway to Completion Associate Scholarship. The two top scoring Leaders of Promise applicants who are declared business majors will each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Students must be enrolled in an associate degree program at a two-year college for fall term immediately following their application in the spring. Students must meet all eligibility criteria for and complete a Leaders of Promise Scholarship application.

 

Richard L. Resurreccion Public Safety Scholarships

The Richard L. Resurreccion Public Safety Scholarship recognizes Phi Theta Kappa members who demonstrate potential for or involvement in public safety or service while enrolled in a regionally accredited associate degree public safety program. Members may begin applying for this scholarship in February and applications are due in April each year. The scholarship selection shall be made by the International Public Safety Leadership and Ethics Institute. Students selected as Resurreccion Public Safety Scholars are notified in August/September each year. Two scholarships valued at $1,000 annually.
