GIS 1001 Exercise: Downloading and displaying data.
Go to the Illinois Natural Resources Spatial Data Clearinghouse:
http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/nsdihome/ISGSindex.html
- select a county, download the layers for that county
- convert the layers from the e00 format
- download one of the Digital Topographic maps (a DRG) within the county
- display the layers and the topographic map in
ArcGIS
GIS 1001 Exercise: Creating Digital Data Layers
- Open ArcGIS, including a new project view
- Under the "File" menu select "extensions"
- place a check in the box next to "MrSID Image Support"
- add the following theme from P:\GIS 1001\doqs "41089c14.sid" (it is an "Image Data
Source")
- Turn on the theme; it is a digital aerial image that includes
IVCC.
- Zoom in to IVCC and create the following layers:
- Buildings
- Roads
- Parking Lots
- Athletic Fields
- Add some type of identifying attribute to the attribute table.
GIS 1001 Exercise: Creating a Map
Using the project you created in "Creating Digital Data Layers," create a set of maps that show
the following:
- The location of IVCC with respect to the surrounding community.
- The location of key buildings, parking, and athletic venues.
The rest is up to you: color coding, key, scale, etc.
