OBJECTIVESBy the end of the semester you will
be able to:
- Explain and use
scientific methods of inquiry.
- Use maps and aerial
photographs to examine and illustrate geologic
features.
- Explain the three
rock types, describe their characteristics,
explain the processes that produce them and
explain their importance in interpreting geologic
history.
- Explain the concept
and magnitude of geologic time.
- Explain the concept
of relative geologic dating and absolute geologic
dating and be able to use the techniques to
interpret geologic history.
- Identify fossils by
phyla, use fossils to determine the age of a rock
and interpret geologic history.
- Describe the
structure of the interior of the Earth and the
concept of plate tectonics.
- Describe the major
geologic events of the Earths history.
- List the major
divisions and dates of the geologic time scale.
- Develop a general
geologic history of an area based on the rocks,
fossils, and geologic structures present.
