Physical Geology Helpful Lab Hints
Exercise 7: Aerial Photos
Problem 1
(You will need to check out
the stereo viewing glasses from the help window in the Bio Lab.)
- a. Tear out the page with the
photos on it (you have to turn it in) and compare the volcano to the two
shown the map. (You may have to turn the photos.)
- b. Hint: Which way is north on the map?
- c: Hint: Find features on the edges of the
photo, locate them on the map, and use them as a guide.
- d: Hint: Where are the shadows?
Remember, the top of the volcano is a bowl-shaped crater.
- e:
- Find two features on the map that are 1
mile apart (or 1/2 mile apart). (Use the scale on the map)
- Find the same features on the photo and
measure the distance between them with a ruler (in inches).
- Your scale will be: ruler distance (in
inches) = 1 mile (or 1/2 mile).
- f: Easy question. (Remember which
direction is north.) Remember to explain your answer.
- g: What do you see? You really need to
look through the glasses to see this.
- h: Follow the directions on page 103 &
105 in Lab 6.
- i: Measure the width on the map or
profile (use the map scale, it's good for both). Measure the height by
using the contour lines on the map or the vertical scale on the profile.
- j. Review textbook Chapter 9 on
volcanoes.
