Course Objectives
By the end of the semester you will be able to:
- Explain and use scientific methods of inquiry.
- Explain the scope and subdisciplines of oceanography.
- Explain the general history of oceanography.
- Use maps and aerial photographs to examine and illustrate
oceanographic concepts.
- Explain the structure of the interior of the earth and the
concept of plate tectonics and the effects of plate tectonics on oceans.
- Describe the primary features of an ocean basin and its
margins.
- Describe the sedimentary environments present in the ocean and
explain their origin and importance.
- Describe the chemistry and physics of seawater and explain its
origin and importance.
- Explain the effects of the ocean on the weather and climate.
- Describe the movement of ocean water as currents and waves and
Explain the causes of these movements.
- Describe the features present along coasts and explain the
origin of those features.
- Describe the life present in the ocean and explain its origin,
distribution and interactions.
- Describe some of the current environmental problems associated
with the oceans.
