What What is an Computer Aided Engineering?

Engineering Graphics has made significant changes since the early 80's.  Most of these changes are the result of the evolution of CAD.  Before computer generated drawings most drafting was done on traditional drafting boards with paper, pencils, drafting tools and blueprint machines.  Most of the drafting and design we do on computers today still use the same standards and techniques that were used for early engineering drawings.

At first CAD packages emphasized two dimensional orthographic projection techniques.  CAD generated and board generated drawings were very similar.  Today in the paperless environment products are designed, engineered and produced without these "hard copy" drawings. Designs are modeled in the CAD system and the data is used in manufacturing, marketing and production departments using a computer network or Internet.
