ENG 1205-01 Home Page Resume/Application Letter Assignment (Due Thursday, 5/1)

RESUME/APPLICATION LETTER ASSIGNMENT

Your task for this assignment is to prepare an application letter (100 points) and resume (100 points) that highlight your qualifications for a particular position.


REQUIREMENTS 

Prepare a one-page application letter applying for a job and a one- to two-page resume that highlights your qualifications for this job.  Please be certain to apply for a real job for which you have good qualifications and interest.  Both the letter and the resume should be neat in appearance and, ideally, error free.

If you are not ready to apply for a job in your chosen career field, you may use this assignment to do one of the following: 1) apply for an internship, 2) apply for a part-time job, or 3) apply for a different position with your current employer.  If you have any other ideas for making your resume and application letter directly applicable to your own employment, please let me know. As an option, see the web page of IVCC Career Services for online job listings (use the Job Opportunities and Internships links under the Students heading).  

Regardless of the job for which you apply, you are expected to use the correct name and address of the company.  Whenever possible, you should also include the name of the person to whom you would send your documents and this person's position/title. As you write the letter and resume, please be selective in what information you include, persuasive in presenting yourself to the reader, and reader-centered when possible. 

I realize that some of you may have a resume on file, perhaps an application letter, as well.  You're welcome to use these documents for this assignment.  However, you will need to make sure that you make appropriate changes based upon what you learn during this unit and based upon the specific requirements of the job listing to which you are responding.

NOTE: You must attach a copy of the job listing or a description of the position you are applying for to your resume and application letter. If the job listing or description is not attached, you will lose 10 points from both your resume grade and your application letter grade.


GRADING CRITERIA 

Your letter and resume will be graded based on how effectively you 1) provide the appropriate information in an organized, persuasive fashion for the specific reader; 2) use formatting to create an appealing appearance; and 3) use correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling.
