Description Instructions Assignment

Your task for this assignment is to create a product using duct tape and to write the following:

NOTE: This assignment will be collaborative, and you will be working in groups of three students to complete it. Each group member must do his or her fair share of the work to earn full credit for the assignment. It is up to each group to distribute the work fairly. However, you may consult with me if your group is experiencing any difficulty with this aspect of the project.

You’d be surprised how many things are made from duct tape. For instance, see The Duck Tape Club (http://www.ducktapeclub.com/ducktivities/) and Make It Yourself with Duct Tape (http://www.octanecreative.com/ducttape/howto/). Your group may choose to make whatever you wish, but keep in mind that the larger, more complex your product, the longer, more complex your description and instructions will need to be.

Obviously, your group must produce original work. While you may be inspired by a duct tape project that you find online, you must create your own product and write your own description and instructions. Of course, I’ll be checking what your group turns in against projects and instructions that are online. Copying from a website or other source is plagiarism.

EXTRA CREDIT: If your group creates a duct tape product that I can’t find online, your group will earn an extra 5% on your grade for this project.

Your description of your duct tape product should include an introduction, a description of its appearance (including size, color, etc.), a list of features, any necessary explanation of how the product is used, and a picture of your product. Your purpose is to enable your readers to understand what your product looks like and how it is used.

Your instructions should contain an introduction and the specific, numbered steps for creating your product. The instructions should be complex enough to include at least seven separate steps. If the instructions contain more than nine steps, break the instructions up into sections. Also include any relevant warnings, cautions, or notes. Finally, include appropriate visuals to help your reader follow the instructions (probably drawings). Your purpose is to enable your readers to make the product themselves.

For this assignment, you should assume a lay audience, people who are unfamiliar with your product and who have never attempted to make it out of duct tape.

You’ll be including the description and instructions in the same document. Give the entire document a title (e.g. the name of your product), and use effective major headings and secondary headings to separate sections of your group's document, as well as lists where appropriate. Include visuals using the guidelines discussed in Chapter 3.

Your document will be graded for content, organization, correctness (sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling), writing style, format, and usability.

NOTE: At the end of the project, your fellow group members will fill out an evaluation of your individual contributions to the group. If those evaluations, combined with my own observations, indicate that you haven't done your fair share of the work, your individual grade for the project will be penalized substantially.
