Essay 4 Essay 4ESSAY 4: IN-CLASS ESSAY
In preparing to write your in-class essay, you will read two to three editorials in IVCC's student newspaper, the IV Leader. You will select one of these editorials as your topic for Essay 4. The list of editorials, with a link to each, will be provided on Monday, 4/28.
WRITING TASK
Once you have chosen an editorial as your topic, write a response in which you agree or disagree (or some of both) with the editorial. In writing your response, analyze the ideas that the editorial presents and combine that analysis with your own knowledge of or experience with the topic. Include a clear thesis statement that sums up the main point you are trying to make in your essay. When appropriate, correctly include references to and quotations from the editorial. Because of time, however, you are not required to include a Works Cited page, and you do not need to provide a page number for the references and quotations. As you write, assume the same audience as the editorial--IVCC students.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
When you write your essay, you may use an outline and a print-out of the editorial. Note the following requirements for the outline:
You may have a one-sentence thesis statement written out as a full sentence.
The rest of your outline may contain only 4-5 main points, which may only be written out as short phrases of half a dozen words or so (no complete sentences).
The outline may be handwritten or typed, as long as it follows the guidelines above.
The outline is due at the beginning of class on the day scheduled for the in-class essay and is worth 10 points.
In the time you have on the day you write your essay, do your best to revise for content and organization and to edit for sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. You should use a formal style: avoid first-person pronouns, second-person pronouns, and slang. Note that you will not have an option to rewrite and resubmit this essay for a higher grade.
