LIB 1000
Research Strategies
Welcome to LIB 1000. This is a 1 credit
hour course which transfers as an elective to many Illinois
universities.
Learning online requires a certain level of
dedication that often goes beyond that required for an on-campus
student. I strongly
advise that you visit the Are
You Ready page to determine whether online learning is for you.
There are great benefits to learning online.
This is not a self-paced course:
You will follow a schedule, though you will not be required
to stop your life to drive over to the college. You choose the time of day that fits into your schedule.
It is up to
you to schedule about 3 hours per week to work on the course.
This is a flexible way to learn but it is no less demanding than
traditional classes. Plan to log in to the Blackboard
at least 3 times per week.
We will use a variety of communication tools to progress
through the course materials. Information
about the technology you will need is contained in the course
outline.
How This Course Works
This course will be divided into 4 units.
Each unit will include a combination of methods for helping
us to achieve the course objectives.
Electronic Lectures, prepared by the
instructor, provide you with background information about the topics
we are studying in each unit.
Readings will supplement the electronic
lecture. Links to
resources available on the Web will be provided for each discussion
topic.
Discussion Topics will utilize an
electronic discussion area called a Blackboard.
Two to three times each week you will log onto the discussion
area, at the time most convenient to you, to respond to posted
discussion questions or to comment on posts made by other students
in the class.
Guided Exercises lead you through the
use of online databases that are available through the IVCC Jacobs
Library.
Skill Builders for each unit will help to
reinforce concepts and provide an opportunity to further explore
tools available to you.
Project Builders direct you toward your
goal of completing your final project.
Required Online Sessions and Testing
There are no online sessions requiring you to
be at your computer at a specific time of day.
There are no quizzes in this course. There is an online
final exam.
This not a self-paced class, however. You will be expected to
make steady progress with assignments and to participate in class
discussions. Attendance is measure by your 'presence' in the
course Blackboard learning environment. The instructor
reserves the right to withdraw students who are one week behind.
More About the Course
In this course we will begin to look at the
effects and promises of the Information Age.
This course will be of value to you if you are
- Currently
enrolled in a course that will require you to write a research
paper.
- Needing
to solve problems for your work or community activities.
- Suffering
from Information Overload.
- Aspiring
to enter a career in computer systems design or management
information systems.
- Just
wanting to learn how to find information on the Internet.
Research Strategies will focus on four areas of information
management, often defined as Information Literacy.
Information literacy is the ability to
-
Recognize a need for information
-
Seek information
-
Evaluate resources
-
Use information
About the Instructor
I have a Bachelor degree in Elementary
Education. After graduating from Northern Illinois University,
I used that degree to teach 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade.
I have been on the staff of Jacobs Library for the past thirteen
years. My duties are varied and included classroom
presentations to instruct students in the use of resources available
at Jacobs Library. I have taught this online class for several
semesters after having taken one so I could experience an online
class from both sides.
Getting Started
For those of you who have enrolled in the course, please email the
instructor, joanne_jalley@ivcc.edu, during the week prior to course. You will then receive
further information on participating in the course.
You will find that what you learn in the class will make your
college experience much easier, and the benefits will spill over
into your work life and your personal life.
