4.      You should be able to balance a chemical reaction and do stoichiometric calculations.

5.      You should be able to calculate the energy produced in reactions.

6.      You should be able to determine the 3-d structure of molecules and the bonding theories.

Grading: I will regrade ANY question or lab within 1 week of making the assignment/exam available for you to pick up in class.  After 1week I will NOT consider regrading any questions or labs. Your final grade is calculated by determining a weighted average.  Exams account for 70%, labs account for 20%, quizzes and homework assignments account for the remaining 10%.

Grading Scale:  100-90 pts = A   89-80 pts = B   79-70 pts = C   69-60 pts = D   59-0 pts = F

Testing: There will be 4 unit exams at 100 pts each and a cumulative final exam worth 200 pts. You are expected to take the exam during the scheduled day and time.  Only under extreme circumstances are exams given at other times.  If you feel that you have a justified reason for missing an exam, you must make arrangements with the instructor prior to the exam time.  If you do not make prior arrangements, you will be given a zero.  Travel plans for holidays/vacations are NOT a justifiable reason.  The only exception is for those late exams due to an official IVCC activity.

Extra Credit: Throughout the semester there will be several opportunities to participate in activities that serve as extra credit.  These activities are sponsored by the chemistry club and are intended to encourage your participation in a professional association and to encourage volunteerism in the IVCC community.  There are NO make up quizzes, however participation in EC activities will provide an opportunity to make up points missed.

Quizzes: You will be given a quiz about once per week in either seminar or in lecture.

Homework: I will typically assign 4-6 problems for you to do online via Blackboard per chapter.  Late homework will not be accepted.  I will also be checking that homework problems from the end of chapter are being completed in seminar for credit.

Lecture Attendance:  Lecture attendance will be monitored, however is not directly tied to your grade.  If you miss more than 4 lectures or 3 seminars, I reserve the right to have you withdrawn from the course.

Questions: You are encouraged to ask questions during lecture, feel free to verbally interrupt the class, as I might not notice a raised hand.  If you do not feel comfortable asking questions in class feel free to use the office hours, email or lab hours to get your questions answered.  If you miss class please contact a classmate to determine what material was covered and any assignments given.  Obtain a copy of the notes from a classmate and then come to me with questions.  I do not give students copies of my lecture presentation.

Withdraw Policy: If you stop attending class, it is up to you to initiate the withdraw process by contacting me.  If you are getting a grade lower than you want, it is up to you to initiate the withdraw process by contacting me.  I will assign an “F” to students who stop attending class but do not withdraw.

Student Conduct:

General: Conduct that interferes with the learning process of others will not be tolerated.  Students must follow the IVCC student conduct code at all times.  I reserve the right to withdraw any student who I feel is causing a problem in the class or lab.

Dishonesty: Students caught cheating on exams, quizzes or labs will face one of three possible outcomes.  1. Grade of F for course given.   2. Withdrawn from course.  3. A zero given for the assignment.   I reserve the right choose the option I feel best fits the situation.

Laboratory: You will have 1 week to complete each laboratory assignment.  It is up to you to find time within your schedule to complete the laboratory.  Laboratory assignments are due at the start of class on the assigned day.  Late labs will be accepted with a penalty of –3 points each day it is late.
