Essay # 3 International Education: India

Responding to Literature (Maximum Points 120)

As discussed in class, here are the details for Essay 3.

In a well formulated essay, respond to one or both of “The Management of Grief” (948-961) and “Fruit Gathering” (1223).

The purpose of this essay is to inform and explain your readers this story/ poem. For this you may rely on interpretation/ analysis. 80% of the essay will be based on your primary source/s. You may go beyond the Formalist approach (see page 84 for Literary Criticism) and include sociological information about the topic and add author’s biographical information etc. You will research significance of India.  Your readers may or may not be familiar with the topic, so do provide ample information from the selection and add your insight to your   claim.  In addition, bring support from two to four academic secondary sources and weave in this support within your essay. I will be one of your sources. Remember that to avoid plagiarism and a failing grade, you must give credit to the sources by following the MLA format of documentation.

v     As you already know, the requirements for an academic essay dictate a focus on organization, strong thesis statement and topic sentences. Create coherence, unity, and order in the essay. Add an academic title. Proofread for punctuation and grammar. Highlight the thesis statement and the topic sentences in each copy.

v     Use innovative strategies for the introductory paragraph, the concluding paragraph, and for linking ideas.

v     Use a variety of sentences.

v     Organize and submit copies of the secondary sources.

For getting full credit, your   process papers and essay must be available to you during each class session.

I would also urge you to work with the Writing Center.
