ENG 1001

K. Jagasia

Essay # 3 International Education: India

Responding to Literature (Maximum Points 120)

Essay Requirements:

For this essay, respond to one of the following:

  1. “Two Ways to Belong in America” (397) (We will discuss this in class.)
  2.  Gandhi or another Hindi film (Please come to my office to discuss.)
  3. One or two short stories by Esther David (Please come to my office to discuss.)

The purpose of this essay is to inform and explain your readers of some significance of the stories or the films. They are about India, and your readers may or may not be familiar with the topic, so do provide ample information (80% of paper) from the story or movie selected by you and add your insight to your   claim.

v     As you already know, the requirements for an academic essay dictate a focus on organization, strong thesis statement and topic sentences. Create coherence, unity, and order in the essay. Add a creative title. Proofread for punctuation and grammar. Highlight the thesis statement and the topic sentences, and submit a typed sentence outline.

v     Use innovative strategies for the introductory paragraph, the concluding paragraph, and for linking ideas.  Identify which strategies were used by you.

v     Use a variety of sentences and use a pen to identify each pattern once in the margin.

v     To avoid plagiarism, you must give credit ideas, information, word/s used in your work from other source/s.   One way to cite a source is to use a lead-in, put quotation marks around the borrowed words, and enclose the author’s name and page numbers in parenthesis. Another way to cite is to paraphrase (rephrase) information in your own words, and this paraphrasing requires no quotation marks because the words come from you and not from the story.  However, for paraphrasing too, you must use the author’s name and page numbers/appropriate parenthetical citations. A plagiarized paper will receive a failing grade for the paper and will lead to a failing grade for the course.  Use quotation marks for the borrowed words and give the name of the original author. Smith says, “These students exhibit strong positive attitude” (211).  Then on the Works Cited page, give information about Smith and his book.  A quick guide is available in the IVCC Style Book.  Follow the same format, minus the quotation marks, for paraphrased material. Do not rely on long quotations.

v     Your   process papers and essay must be available to you in each class session.

I would also urge you to work with the Writing Center.
