When emailing or printing an article, choose to include the Citation Format (pick MLA) & the database will give you its recommendation for the citation on your Works Cited page. Your teacher may want it changed, but at least it’s a starting point.

The citation option here gets a little messed up. The database reverses the order of the way the author’s name should appear.

Uncheck ‘Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR’

Note: you could choose some of the categories of journals to search, but by choosing none you search them all.

‘Article Information’ is your citation information and also an abstract

When printing an article, make sure to use the ‘print’ link in JSTOR.

Also, many JSTOR articles are rather long and may take a while to load and print the PDF. Have patience!

Helpful Instructions – Library Catalog

To find the book on the shelf, check ‘location’, ‘call number’ and ‘status’.

The call number will match up with the letters and numbers on the label on the book you try to find.

Items that say ‘full text online’ are e-books you can view on the computer. There is a link to follow near the bottom of the record. To access it from off-campus you may need to create yourself a NetLibrary account.

If you have at least a week to wait before you need your book, you could also try searching the I-Share Catalog to see what is available at other Illinois college and university libraries.

Once you find something you would like to order through I-Share, you can log-in and request it yourself! We’ll let you know when it arrives, and you can also check on the status of your request in the ‘My Account’ feature of our catalog.

Helpful Instructions – Gale reference books

*If you don’t understand why you should do these things, or what they mean, please ask!!

In order to find resources in our sets of reference books published by Gale, you’ll need three things. 1. Gale Literary Index (located on our Useful Websites page) 2. handout called ‘Gale Literary Sets at Jacobs Library’ 3. our reference collection

Look up your author or your title in the Index online

If you use title search click the option for ‘match all words entered’

Click on appropriate link to get to list

Compare list to handout. Do we have the same book title and volume # you need?

If so, you may want to print from the index or write it on your handout. (1- = all)

Now look at the call # in the third column of the handout. Head to the reference section of the library to locate needed set and volume. The call number will match up with the letters and numbers on the label on the book you try to find.

To cite an article from these books, check the link ‘How to Cite Gale Resources’.

Reference books stay in the library. You can put money on your ID card to make copies.

Materials on Reserve
