BEYOND GREEN: SUSTAINABILITY AT IVCC Presenter: Jared Olesen This presentation will be a refresher on sustainability in general and then discuss IVCC's progress toward the goal of ecological sustainability. Discover the concept of sustainability, what it means, and how it updates old ideas about environmentalism. Discuss past efforts to move IVCC towards energy efficiency and a lower ecological footprint and current, ongoing efforts toward sustainability, as well as ideas for the future.

LEADING AN ALMOST STRESS FREE LIFE Presenter: Bob Mattson Although everyone needs some stress in their lives, overstress and negative stress are not good. Listen and discuss positive techniques that can be used to greatly reduce the negative stress in our lives. Learn how to use stress as a positive motivator. Discover techniques to leading an almost stress free life to use both at work and at home. Share techniques you use to reduce negative stress.

LITERACY: LIFE CHANGING LESSONS Presenter: Angela Dunlap Did you know that more than 20,000 adults without a high school diploma or its equivalent live in the IVCC District? Attend this presentation to find out who is affected by low literacy skills and how you can help. This presentation will explore the definition of literacy and world, national, state, and local literacy statistics. In addition, this presentation will incorporate specific information about the I-READ Adult Literacy Program, including reasons learners participate in the program and benefits tutors experience by volunteering with the program. Stories of success from the perspective of the learners and tutors will be shared. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of the causes of low literacy rates and of ways to ameliorate this issue.

PERSONAL SAFETY/AWARENESS OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS Presenter: Chris Jauch This presentation will demonstrate how certain actions within our surroundings can provide us with information to enable us to protect ourselves from harm. Attendees will learn how to "read" their surroundings, understand actions that can lead to danger, and how to prepare one's self to deal with personal safety. This presentation will not look at self-defense tactics, but common sense activities to help prevent one's self from getting into dangerous situations. How to help minimize problem situations will also be addressed.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? - GETTING STARTED IN GENEALOGY Presenter: Carol Wheeler This presentation will guide participants through getting started in their genealogy quest, with a focus on step-by-step instructions to document family lineage, beginning with "YOU." Samples of basic research forms and family group sheets will be provided. Discussion will include a brief explanation on documenting sources and tips on recording unique family histories. Some actual family history documents will be on display for viewing. Discover the many area resources available to use in researching our ancestors. Learn about local historical societies, genealogical societies, and Illinois repositories that have documentation available for free viewing. In addition, a reference sheet of free websites for researching Illinois-related genealogy databases and indices will be provided to participants.

A "TOAST" TO YOUR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Also offered at Session D Presenter: Illinois Valley Toastmasters Club
Have you ever been "tongue-tied?" Do you get nervous talking, even in small groups? This presentation will provide opportunities for improving your thinking, speaking, and leadership skills in a mutually supportive and positive learning environment.

DON'T FEAR FITNESS: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO NUTRITION & EXERCISE Also offered at Session D Presenter: Jeff Anderson
This presentation is intended to promote health and well-being in two ways. First, the fundamentals of nutrition will be explained so that participants can make healthier eating choices. Common nutritional questions will be answered: "What is a calorie and how many do I need in a day?" "How can I choose the right kinds of foods?" "Does eating healthier food mean eating bland meals?" Second, the presentation will discuss the benefits of exercise and show participants how to start their own exercise program. A variety of activities that participants can do will be discussed and demonstrated. Participants will have an opportunity to perform various low impact exercises and stretches. The presentation is intended to be informative, hands-on, and fun!

A Fairy Garden is a way to be creative with structures, decorations, and living plants to create the illusion that fairies have inhabited your landscape. Whether a container garden or a dedicated spot in your yard, the only limitation is your imagination! This presentation will cover different types of fairy gardens, ingredients from the basic to the lavish, a background of fairy lore, and how the hobby originated. Fairy gardens in containers, as well as extra items to give participants an example of the variety possible, will be displayed and discussed. A PowerPoint show of the presenter's own fairy gardens over the years, resources for materials and ideas, how to make some of your own items, and, most of all, how to enjoy yourself while doing it, will be presented. The whole idea of a fairy garden is to use your imagination and creativity - and to have fun with gardening.

Fortunately, in our area, there are free clinics available to help in surprising ways. Learn how to begin to navigate the complex systems available to help those without insurance, Medicare or Medicaid; for people with insurance with large deductibles; and for people in the 'donut hole' of Medicare prescription drugs. Discover how to provide good care conservatively and inexpensively and a fun way to pay the bills.

Have you been seeing the boxes with funny mosaic patterns on your mail, in the store, on boxes, on TV, or even t-shirts? They are Quick Response Codes or QR codes, and they are being used by marketing departments and others to give more information about a product, a coupon, directions, phone number or email. In this presentation, you will learn about QR codes and how to use them.
