Department of History

History is either considered a social science or a humanities, depending on the institution where it is studied and/or the particular course being offered. At IVCC, all history courses fall under the category of social sciences, with the exception of History of Western Civilization I and II, which are considered humanities courses.

The study of History is integral to college education because it provides knowledge of the past that is essential to any individual’s understanding of his or her role in contemporary society. History promotes analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to evaluate sources and draw appropriate conclusions, the expression of ideas in writing and speech, and it allows students the ability to see how the past impacts the present and the future. Students majoring in History often find careers in education, law, government, the media and business.
