Jane Tompkins

Jane Tompkins, long associated with Duke University, moved to Chicago in 1999 and now is a full professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago where she is the Assistant to the Provost for Campus Environment.  Her interests have stemmed from the intensive study of literature, to popular culture's affects on society, to teaching and learning.  According to her website, she is also interested in "spirituality in education, the culture of institutions, and creativity in the workplace," all interests that she is able to fulfill in her current position at UIC.   Your selection comes from her book Sensational Designs: The Cultural Work of American Fiction, 1790-1860, in which she argues that literary works that have traditionally been held to be better than others might have cultural, demographical help in achieving that higher status.  Her latest book is A Life in School: What the Teacher Learned.
