Orientation: Course Policies
Before you begin the course, you should become familiar with the course policies. The Course Outline and Policies page presents the important information that you would find on a course syllabus or outline, including an overview of the assignments and the grading. The page tells you what you can expect and what is expected of you. Make sure to read the Course Outline and Policies page carefully.
Of course, because we do not have regular class meetings, this course does not have an attendance policy. However, this is not a correspondence course or an independent study course. Instead, students are expected to interact regularly with the instructor and other students, so the page linked above includes the following policy:
- A student who does not complete assignments or does not log in to the course WebBoard for more than a fourteen-day period may be withdrawn from the course without warning.
WebBoard keeps a record of the last time a student has logged in to WebBoard, and the course requires that students log in to WebBoard every few days to keep up with assignments. As the policy above indicates, a student may be withdrawn from the course without warning if more than two weeks go by without the student logging in to WebBoard.
Students are also expected to contribute regularly to the course. We have many discussion assignments and other interactive assignments that require students to post messages and to read messages from others regularly. To increase the likelihood that you will succeed in the course, it's vital that you check the Assignments pages frequently and that you enter and interact in WebBoard every day or two.
(In the past, a student has commented that she was surprised by the requirement for regular interaction, but she said that she liked the requirement because she thought that the interaction was one of the best parts of the class.)
Another important course policy concerns the due dates for assignments:
- Each assignment in the course has a due date and time, and late work will not be accepted.
Even though we are working at a distance, we are still working together on assignments, so it's vital that members of the class keep up with assignments.
It's also important to realize that all members of the class are expected to communicate appropriately and politely both with the instructor and with other students. The Netiquette page provides guidelines to help ensure that we maintain a productive and friendly online environment.
The Course Outline and Policies page provides a good overview of the course and includes information not presented here, so please read that page carefully and ask questions if you have any!
