English Composition 1

Using Rich Text Format for Word-Processed Files

All word-processed files for English Composition 1 Online must be saved as Rich Text Format (or RTF) files.

Rich Text Format is a word-processing format that can be read by different word processors. Students in the English Composition 1 Online must save files in Rich Text Format so that all files can be opened and read by other students who may be using different word-processing programs.

Recent versions of most word-processing programs are capable of saving files in Rich Text Format, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Works, Microsoft WordPad, and Corel WordPerfect.

Below are two "Save as" boxes, the first from Microsoft Word 97 and the second from Microsoft Works 4.0, illustrating how to save a file in Rich Text Format (or RTF). The process is the same for more recent versions of the programs and for other word-processing programs.

The word-processing software that you use may display the information a little differently than is illustrated by the two examples below, but the principle is the same. When you save your word-processing files for the course, just choose "Save As" (most likely from a "File" menu), look for where you can indicate the type of file, and choose "Rich Text Format" or "RTF."
