English Composition 1

Respecting Privacy

There is a certain amount of anonymity associated with electronic communication, and this anonymity may cause people to reveal more information about themselves that they would in person. However, I would suggest that all students in the class be careful about how much private information they divulge to others.

I assume that all students in the class are good people, and I would hate to find out that anyone is using private information about someone else in a questionable way, but that possibility always exists. Keep in mind that you can never be sure how safe it is to reveal private information to other people, especially if you do not know those other people well. You are responsible for determining how much and what kind of information about yourself you wish to reveal to other members of the class, and neither Illinois Valley Community College nor I can assume responsibility for any consequences resulting from students divulging private information to other students. I don't mean to scare anyone with these comments. I assume that all students will behave appropriately and that no problems will arise, but we all know how the proverbial bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. Just be careful about opening up your private life too much to people that you do not know well.

Likewise, no one in the class should expect other students to reveal private information about themselves. If you feel that someone else in the class is trying to get "too close" by pressuring you to respond to questions about your private life, make sure to contact me immediately.
