Paraprofessional Certificate/Degree
As a result of, No Child Left Behind act, any education paraprofessional hired after January 8, 2002, must have completed two years of study at an institution of higher education; obtained as associate’s degree or higher; or meet a rigorous standard of quality through a formal local or state assessment. The Regional Office of Education has been sponsoring the workshops and exam. The two exams that have been approved for the state are the ETS Paraprofessional Exam and the ACT Work keys exam. The exam options is for those who have completed at least 30 hours of course work. For those who would prefer a paraprofessional certificate or a degree, IVCC has developed a Paraprofessional Certificate and it is approved state of Illinois.
The Paraprofessional Education program has been developed to assist those who are currently working in the field of education as a paraprofessional (teacher aide) and/or for those interested in the field of education and are taking initial steps to become a teacher. The program is being designed to assist paraprofessionals to function optimally in the classroom. Type of jobs for trained graduates: Paraprofessionals can work in state certified schools, from preschool through high school, including special education. The Paraprofessional program fits in completely with the A.A. degree for education. All of the required courses have been developed and approved. This program has been designed with a tier approach in mind. The Paraprofessional program requirements could lead from a certificate to a degree and eventually, lead to an A.A.T. degree.
