May 2004 News Release

Consortium for Enhancing Teacher Education in the Community College Grant:  Teacher Preparation

Five faculty members from IVCC’s Mathematics, English, and Education department along with the department dean, Marianne Dzik participated in the Consortium for Enhancing Teacher Education in the Community College:  Teacher Preparation Grant with five other community colleges.  The colleges that participated in the Consortium for Enhancing Teacher Education in the Community College focused on one goal, to develop a model for Illinois community colleges to prepare their pre-service teacher education students to pass the Basic Skills Test.  It also provided an opportunity to educate other faculty about the exam as it aligns with the general education core curriculum/outcome/assessment measure with the eighteen standards of the exam.

Mathematics faculty, Linda Mudge and Cindy Schultz; English faculty Tara Coburn and Kimberly Radek teamed up with Jill Urban Bollis, Education faculty to develop an Enhanced Basic Skills Preparation Workshop.
This workshop is for students who are preparing to take the Enhanced Basic Skills exam.  Passing of this exam is a requirement for certification for teaching in the state of Illinois.

The Enhanced Basic Skills Exam is one of three professional exams prospective teachers will need to complete and pass prior to being certified as a teacher in the state of Illinois.  The consortium gathered program materials and strategies for advising teacher education students.  For example, it was recommended that education students complete this exam after successfully completing 45 college credits.  The consortium from various community colleges also collected methods and materials that could be included in a model format for conducting workshops to better prepare students for this exam.  One option is for students to attend a workshop to refresh their skills in high-level reading, language arts, mathematics and analytical writing.  In addition, the workshop could address test anxiety and test taking strategies.

At IVCC the Enhanced Basic Skills Workshop will include instructors from the various disciplines.  Students will be able to utilize the IVCC Enhanced Basic Skills Workbook with practice questions to help refresh their reading, writing, and math skills.   The guidebook will be available in the IVCC Jacobs Library.  The first workshop will be offered in October.  Interested students can
