Job Fair 2008

FAQ's for Job Seekers

  1. When and where is this year's job fair?
The 17th annual Job Fair entitled is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2008 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  The event is held in the Illinois Valley Community College Gymnasium on IVCC's main campus, 815 North Orlando Smith Ave., Oglesby, Illinois.
  2. How can I register for the job fair?
All Job Seekers are asked to register at the door on the day of the Job Fair.  You may register by placing a copy of your resume in the registration box.  If you do not have a resume, you will be asked to sign in.
  3. Who may attend the job fair?
This college district-wide job fair is open to the public and is free to all job seekers.
  4. What types of positions will be available at the job fair?
A variety of employers attend the job fair each year and represent industries including manufacturing, healthcare, financial services, as well as others.
  5. How do I prepare for the job fair?
It is important for job seekers to come to the job fair dressed in interview attire.  Remember that you will be making a favorable first impression with a person who may be your future employer.
In addition, job seekers should come to the job fair with 10 to 20 copies of your resume.  Your resume should be in good form and on quality paper.
  6. What do you consider "interview attire"?
As a job seeker, you should come dressed as you would for a job interview.  Your clothing should be clean and neat and you should be well-groomed.  For men, appropriate interview attire is a sport jacket and dress slacks, for women it is a skirt or dress slacks and a jacket.  The colors you wear should be conservative, along with keeping your jewelry items to the minimum.

  7. What if I do not have a resume?
A resume is an excellent tool to show the employer your skills and abilities, educational background and work history.  If you need assistance preparing your resume or would like to have your resume reviewed by a professional, contact the Career Services Office at IVCC if you are a student, or you may visit one of the Illinois Employment and Training Centers if you are a district resident.
If it is close to the date of the job fair and you do not have a resume, be prepared to complete a job application.  Bring the correct names, addresses and phone numbers of all past employers with you on a sheet of paper.  You will be able to complete job applications at the job fair.
  8. What did last year's job fair look like?
In 2007 there were over 600 job seekers and 75 employers who participated.
  9. What is not allowed at the job fair?
There are several things to keep in mind about job fair behavior to maximize your job fair experience.
    a. Your cell phone should be turned "off".  You should give an employer your undivided attention.  A ringing cell phone is distracting and should not be used during the job fair.
    b. You should visit each employer table by yourself.  The job fair is not a place for children or a place for you to congregate with friends.  The job fair is an opportune time for you to meet employers face-to-face and discuss your strengths and abilities with them.
