Computer Accounts

Your Computer Account may be accessed from the following locations:

All students enrolled in a college credit course will have a computer account, referred to as their U-drive, U:\. The U-drive is the student's home directory and can be used to store files. This account is stored on our network server, IVCC_NOVELL_1.

Students will have a maximum of 200 MB of storage available. Student accounts will be active from fall semester through the summer session. After summer, all student U-drives will be deleted by Information Technology Services.

NetStorage

NetStorage provides access to files on the IVCC computer network while off campus.

With NetStorage, you can

  • View an existing file on your personal U: drive.
  • Download and edit an existing file on your personal drive.
  • Upload files from an off-campus/off-network computer.

Security Notes

  • Use NetStorage to access files with sensitive information instead of carrying them home on a floppy disk or thumb drive.
  • Do Not check the box to have the browser remember your password.  This is not a safe practice, and your Novell password changes periodically.
  • Log off NetStorage and close the browser when you have completed your task.
  • Never leave a computer unattended while logged into NetStorage.

System Requirements

  • Windows 2000 or Windows XP (Latest service packs applied)
  • Broadband internet access recommended for off-campus use (DSL/Cable modem)

Troubleshooting: Windows XP users only -- If Service Pack 2 has been applied to Windows XP

  • You may be unable to download the files for viewing or edition. To combat this problem you should add the NetStorage web site as a trusted site in the browser settings.

  4. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the listing
  5. make sure SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0 are all selected
  6. Click OK

Accessing Files Via NetStorage

  1. Open a web browser, in the address bar type :
    If OFF Campus https://astro.ivcc.edu/NetStorage
    If ON Campus  https://astro.core.ivcc.edu/NetStorage

  2. The N and S in NetStorage must be capitalized or it will not work.

  3. At the Security Alert prompt, select Yes to proceed.

  4. You will be prompted to log in. Use your current IVCC Novel username and password:
    * the username would be the first 3 letters of your last name and the last four digits of your social security number.
    * The password would be your social security number unless you have already changed it.
    Click the OK button.

  5. The frame on the left of the page, contains a list of folders. NetStorage will be the main folder and it will have many subfolders. To access your U:\, click on the Home@IVCC subfolder.

    Please note:
    Home@IVCC = Your IVCC U:\.

You will also have access to other shared network drives, such as the Public Drive (P:).

The Home@IVCC folder should show sub folders for any folders you have in your U:\. The center frame identifies the location (Location: /NetStorage/Home@IVCC) of your files and folders.

Selecting the Text View option will allow for faster navigation.

Downloading Files from Account Via the Internet

The computer your working on must have the same application the file was created in order to view and edit the file. For example, if you were trying to open a PowerPoint file but do not have the program PowerPoint on your computer, you would not be able to open, view or edit the file.

To access a file, all you need to do is double click the file and the application and file will open. However the default security setting for some web browsers might open a window that has a bar at the top that say, “to help your security, Internet Explorer blocked this site from downloading files to your computer. Click here for options….” If you click on the bar you can click download file and it will open up the File Download box where you can either open it or save it.

Please Note: When downloading a file, you can right click on it and you will have the option to download for viewing or download for editing. It is important to note that selecting Downloading For Viewing or double clicking on file allows the person to work on their file from their local computer, NOT their (U:\).
Selecting Download for Editing as an option will lock the file on the campus network and must be uploaded to back to the (U:\) in order to open the file on campus in the future. If a file is locked for Editing, they can copy the file from their (U:\) and paste to their local computer. The file will need to be renamed if saving the file back to their (U:\)

Uploading Files to Your U:\ Via the Internet

Please Note: You must have your pop up blocker disabled (turned off).

  1. If you have a file on your computer that you would like to save (upload) to your (U:\) so that you can access from school, you must make sure you have clicked the link Home@IVCC.

  2. Then locate the folder you want to save the uploaded file. In the center of the frame, click File, then an upload pop up window will open.

  3. Click the browse button and the select the file you want to upload and click OK.

  4. Then click upload. The file will be saved to the folder that is currently active in the location window. It may take awhile to upload a file depending on the size of the file and the speed of your internet connection. To verify that the file has been uploaded to your (U:\), you can simply select Home@IVCC and see if your file is present.
