Our Mission

Counselors at IVCC strive for your optimum learning experience in college.

Our comprehensive services are designed to:

EDUCATE you about requirements, policies and procedures related to degree programs at IVCC and the transfer process toward a baccalaureate degree at 4-year institutions;

ADVOCATE for your success through collaborative efforts and student support resources;

EMPOWER you to make good decisions and accept responsibility for your academic plan.

Academic Advising

“Academic Advising is a collaborative educational process whereby you and the counselor are partners in ensuring your academic success, and outlining the steps for achievement of your personal, academic, and career goals” (Nutt, 2005).  Beginning with admission to the college and continuing each semester, we encourage you to consult with a counselor each semester to schedule your courses.  We will assist with:

  • Program review
  • Course sequences
  • Semester schedules

Academic Planning

Counselors are available to facilitate the exploration of your educational goals by:

  • Introducing degree guide sheets & electronic resources
  • Learning strategies for success
  • Exploring major fields of study
  • Understanding general education requirements
  • Mapping the path, timeline, expense and personal resources needed to meet your goal

Career Counseling

IVCC Counselors can help you to explore and clarify your understanding of personal qualities that influence your career choice.  Career Assessments, also known as personality and interest inventories, are available to aid in the career decision-making process and to select educational programs related to a chosen career direction.  Counselors assist with:

  • Exploring options and opportunities in the career fields
  • Identifying your personal interests, skills and abilities
  • Matching an educational plan with your career interests
  • Encouraging personal growth and development through education

Career information is located in the Counseling Center (E-201),  Career Services Office, E-link and Career Cruising.

Personal Counseling

On occasion an unexpected incident can cause personal feelings of doubt, depression, pain, and loss. The IVCC Personal Counseling Assistance Program (P-CAP) provides confidential and professional counseling assistance in emergency situations as well as with ongoing problems. Counselors are professionally trained in mental health, personal development and relationship issues. Referrals may be made to community agencies, medical services or public assistance for continued services.

Transfer Services

Transfer resources at IVCC are key to an effective transfer.  For a seamless transfer, consult a Counselor and/or our Transfer Coordinator for selecting the courses appropriate for your major field of study and transferable to your chosen baccalaureate degree-granting institution.
