Student Clubs and Organizations
Mission Statement
The Student Activities department complements the student’s academic experience through the development of, exposure to, and participation in social, cultural, multicultural, intellectual, recreational, community service and campus governance programs.
Debate Club
Debate Club organizes, hosts or moderates campus held debates, speeches, or other meetings as necessary by request or club needs. The Debate Club hopes to offer students the chance to be a part of all sides of any given issue and to approach matters with an open and reasoned perspective. The Debate Club would also sponsor speakers of various positions to appear at IVCC for educational purposes beyond what may or may not be readily available currently.

The Rivers Project
Illinois Valley Community College has chosen to participate in the Rivers Project because awareness and hands-on experimentation are key factors in promoting the changes necessary for a healthier environment.
Amnesty International
Amnesty
International is an impartial, independent and international
organization. Its purpose is to promote observance of human rights
worldwide as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
(UDHR), adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 1948. AI promotes
adherence to the UDHR and other international human rights
treaties and covenants because these treaties promote a single
standard of human rights for all countries. AI believes that as
individuals we have the right and responsibility to demand that
governments ensure human rights for all people; and that together
we can increase the level of respect for human rights.
The Criminal Justice Association
This club was organized in the spring of 1974 to cultivate a spirit of fraternalism among criminal justice students. Activities include field trips to criminal justice agencies, seminars, speakers, canoe trips, and the annual Criminal Justice Association Banquet. The CJA also sponsors scholarships for students in the Criminal Justice program.
Membership is open to all students majoring in Criminal Justice at IVCC.
Focus on Fitness
Focus on Fitness explores healthy lifestyles for students and faculty members providing exercise and nutritional information. The club also provides educational information on career options in the discipline of Physical Education.
HORT Club
HORT Club students will engage in activities that compliment their studies at IVCC. The club will provide opportunities for students to expand and develop their knowledge of horticulture. Students will attend the Mid-Am Trade Show in January of every year. Fundraisers will include plant sales.
Human Services Organization
Human Services Organization serves as a college and community wide Human Service Advisory Committee. The group participates in a variety of activities related to human services and social welfare.
IV Leader - Student Newspaper
The campus newspaper, published periodically by a student staff and advised by the journalism instructor. The staff is composed of students who contribute their time and talents and is open to all students, part-time and full-time, regardless of major.
In recent years The paper has won first or second place overall among tri-weekly and monthly community college newspapers in Illinois, and staff members have won numerous individual awards in state competition. The newspaper is regularly recognized as First Class and awarded Marks of Distinction by the Associated Collegiate Press and in 1989 was named an All American. The newspaper staff has also won Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and one staff member was a finalist in Rolling Stone Magazine's "Collegiate Journalist of the Year" competition. The newspaper is also regularly named First Place With Special Merit by the American Scholastic Press Association, in addition to winning several individual awards from the A.S.P.A.
Staff positions are open to any student with an interest in any area of publication; previous newspaper experience is not necessary.
IVCC Gay/Straight Alliance
The gay/straight alliance is a support and student activities group which serves the interests of gays, lesbians, bi-sexuals, the transgendered, and anyone interested in the concerns surrounding gay and lesbians' social issues. Through the gay/straight alliance we will foster a more understanding and tolerant community on campus and in the area. The gay/straight alliance will acknowledge the diversity of individuals regarding sexual orientation and embrace that diversity. The members will exemplify respect for diversity, tolerance of all people, education to sexual orientation, and support for the support of self discovery.
International Society
International Society is an organization that seeks to broaden students understanding of and appreciation for our diverse world by having students participate in international programs. Students meet to attend international arts programs and festivals, eat at international restaurants, and assist with programming for international events on campus.
Phi Theta Kappa
Physics Club
Physics Club explores the problems of physics in a social environment, to introduce students to the various applications of physics in the world, and to introduce lower year students to upper year students for tutoring.
POWER (People Of The World End Racism)
POWER strives to decrease all forms of prejudice...based on race, sexual orientation, religion...and promote acceptance of ALL our differences.
Psi Beta/Psychology Club
Psi Beta/Psychology Club is a national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges. Psi Beta chapter at Illinois Valley Community College will recognize students who demonstrate an overall genuine interest in the field of psychology. It will provide leadership opportunities, and it will enhance interaction amongst peers and faculty. It will be a vehicle for them to learn more about the field of psychology, educational and career choices. Members will be able to participate in community service projects and meet psychology professional. The overall goal of this organization is to stimulate, encourage and recognize student scholars in psychology.
Membership is open to students who are enrolled at an accredited two-year college, rank in the top 35% or have an overall GPA of 3.0, have at least a "B" average in Psychology, have completed at least the equivalent of one semester of a psychology course and 12 semester hours overall, have been approved by the chapter, have filed a signed membership registration card, and have paid the once-in-a-lifetime national membership fee of $30.

Sigma Kappa Delta, English Honor Society
The National English Honor Society for students in two-year colleges. Its goals are to recognize and reward outstanding achievement in English language and literature: provide cultural stimulation and promote interest in English on two-year college campuses and in the communities they serve; foster English in all its aspects, including creative and critical writing; promote good professional interaction among members; and exhibit high standards of academic achievement. A candidate for membership shall have completed at least one college course in English language or literature. The candidate shall have a minimum of a B or equivalent average in English and shall have completed at least one semester of college course work for a cumulative total of twelve hours or the equivalent quarter hours. In addition, all persons considered for membership shall exhibit high standards of personal and professional character and shall support purposes of the honor society.
Student Ambassadors
Several student Ambassadors are chosen each spring, based on grade point average, an application and interview process, and recommendations from IVCC faculty or staff. Ambassadors serve the college by volunteering their time to events which take place on campus. Some of the events include orientation, program events, graduations, and others.
Student Government Association
The Student Government Association is the sole, exclusive, and officially recognized governing agent for the student body of IVCC. The SGA is composed of a President, a Vice President, a Treasurer, a Secretary, a Student Trustee, and 1 representative each from the freshman and sophomore classes. The S.G.A. constitution outlines the purpose, policies, procedures, criteria for membership, position descriptions, and other information directly related to the S.G.A.. The organization meets bi-weekly to discuss and take action on matters of concern to the student body, and to plan events and activities for students at the college. In addition, members of the S.G.A. serve with faculty and administrators on various committees such as: Curriculum and Academic Standards, Forum for Communication, President's Advisory Council, etc.
Also, the S.G.A. has the power to recommend to the college administration how it would like to appropriate the student activity fee money that is collected by the college.
Student Organization of Dental Assistants (SODA)
The Student Organization of Dental Assistants is a newly formed student club open to all students enrolled in IVCC's Dental Assisting Program. the club's sponsor is Pat Pearson, Coordinator of the Dental Assisting Program.
Student Nurses Association
The Student Nurses Association was organized to promote professionalism in the field of nursing. The Student Nurses Association has sponsored Red Cross blood donation drives on the IVCC campus, and has actively supported the American Cancer Society by participating annually in The Great American Smoke-Out and The Great American Pig-Out.
The Student Nurses Association has sponsored stress seminars, speakers, and social activities such as an Annual Christmas Tea for the IVCC Staff. Also, the SNA has planned the Pinning/Graduation Ceremony and Reception for the Nurses. SNA plans and participates in orientation for new students in the nursing program, holds tutoring and review sessions, and hosts a "welcome" picnic each fall. Every year SNA sends at least two students to the Nursing Expo Conference in Rockford.
Student Trustee
Students annually elect a student representative to the IVCC Board of Trustees. This student board member participates in every meeting of the board and provides student input concerning all phases of the college's operation. The student board member must be a sophomore who has completed 30 or more credit hours.
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE)
Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) provides college students the best opportunity to make a difference and to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of Free Enterprise.
SPAMO (Students of Performing Arts and Music Organization)
Delta Psi Omega stimulates interest in theatre activities at IVCC and secures for the college all the advantages of a large national honorary fraternity. As a reward for participating in the plays staged by the college, worthy students are elected to membership.
"Transformed" Christian Student Organization
World Language Organization
The IVCC World Languages Organization provides opportunities for linguistic and cultural enrichment and a greater understanding of global populations through activities and service projects for World Language students, the IVCC community, and the public at large.
Young Republicans
To educate all individuals of the issues in politics today. The views of the Republican Party shall be explained to the fullest extent of the members ability. As a service to the Republican Party, campaign support will be offered giving members a more rounded view of politics.
