MLA Format Instructions for Essays
1. Choose View and then select Header/Footer from the dropdown menu.
2. The toolbar contains an icon that looks like an open book and the words page setup appear when you position your cursor over them. Select that icon.
3. From the dialogue box that appears, choose the tab that says layout.
4. Once the layout screen is displayed, check the box that says Different First Page. Now, your first page header is different than the header on the rest of your essay pages.
5. In the first page header, type your last name and the page number in the upper right hand corner.
6. The remaining header information goes to the left margin and includes your name, the instructor's name, the course and section number and the date. This all should be double-spaced.
7. The header on the remaining pages should have your last name and the page number in the upper right hand corner. Remember to use the # sign from the toolbar so that each page receives the correct page number.
