The students of the Illinois Valley Community College Student Affiliate Chapter are involved in the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Rivers Curriculum Project. The SIUE project is aimed at studying the surface water quality in the midwest. SIUE, IVCC, and many other schools from across the state have joined in a collaborative effort to increase awareness of the water quality. The IVCC chapter has chosen the Little Vermilion River as the site of our study.
You can see our students testing the water quality at various sites along the Little Vermilion River. Once this data is collected, it is sent to SIUE to be compiled with all of the other data from all of the other schools that are involved in the Project. IVCC SAACS students test the water quality at least four times a year in March, April, September, and October. Of course, it is not all hard work. Many times we seem to find time for a nice relaxing canoe trip down the Fox River after we are done with testing.
If you would like to be involved in the IVCC SAACS river testing contact Bob Byrne by phone at (815) 224-2720 x 432 or e-mail at byrne@ivcc.edu.
