Learn about companion planting, which crops do or do not grow well near others and where to place each crop to increase productivity. Bring a list of desired crops as well as garden dimensions, pencil, ruler and paper to begin planning your Spring 2014 vegetable garden.

To Seed or Not to Seed
Some plants are easily grown from seed, while others are best left to buy as a plant. Discuss which seeds are the easiest and best to start, when to start them, soil media, germination, and other tips to get seeds growing.

Thriller, Filler, Spiller: Plant Your Garden Containers Like a Pro
You may have seen some amazing containers and baskets around town or at a friend’s house. Now you can learn the theory for creating beautiful planters with a hands-on container class. Class will be held at Gardener’s Gate for an experience that will transform your annual pots from typical to outstanding. Participants may bring empty, clean planters or purchase them. Plant material, soil, and basket liners will also be available for purchase. Remember we will be planting your containers, so don’t forget your gloves and gardening attire. Material costs payable to the instructor vary depending on student material selections.

Let’s Plant It
Learn hands-on planting techniques that you can use anywhere: in your own garden, your home town’s community garden, or start your own garden plot in Ottawa. You will be introduced to garden guidelines as well as lay-out and functionality. After a brief introduction we will begin putting these techniques to practice by planting a donation plot, or students can start that their own garden plot at the Ottawa Community Garden. If starting your own garden plot on the day of class, please visit www.cityofottawa.org for more information, fees, and guidelines.
