This is a great class for municipal employees as well as volunteers. Focus will be on plants that thrive in harsh conditions as well as placement and design of these areas.

Starting Seeds Indoors
Learn how to start your garden indoors by planting seeds. Soil, lighting, seeds, watering and fertilizing will be discussed. Find out how to raise beautiful plants successfully for your spring garden. Grow common plants, as well as flowers and vegetables not offered at nurseries. Learn how to grow plants organically with less
chemicals, save money, and the environment. If you like, bring garden gloves and an apron to this hands-on class. We will get you started at class by planting some flower or vegetable seeds to take home. Please bring a $5 material fee payable to the instructor at class.

Landscape Design: Hands-on Basic Design
Basic landscape design principles will be introduced during this class. We will be using the IVCC Ottawa Center as a project, designing the north side of the campus. We will additionally be planning a separate date to install the project based on the class design. Students will have the opportunity to learn, draw, and install a complete landscape design. This is a great first step in learning how to plan a beautiful, eye appealing landscape.

Thriller, Filler, Spiller: Plant Your Garden Containers Like a Pro
You may have seen some amazing containers and baskets around town or at a friend’s house. Now you can learn the theory for creating beautiful planters with a hands-on container class. Class will be held at Garden’s Gate for an experience that will transform your annual pots from typical to outstanding. Participants may bring
empty, clean planters or purchase them. Plant material, soil, and basket liners will also be available for purchase. Remember: we will be planting your containers, so don’t forget your gloves and gardening attire. Material costs payable to the instructor vary depending on student material selections.

Growing, Preserving & Cooking with Herbs
This class will teach you all about herbs, especially the culinary herbs. You will learn about common herbs as well as those less common but equally useful and heavenly scented. Learn to grow herbs, about seeds and plants, how to cook with them, which ones are toxic, and how to preserve, dry and store them properly. This class will make a lot of “scents”!

Stephanie Stacy
Stephanie Stacy is the owner of Garden’s Gate Garden Center and Landscape Company located in Ottawa. She holds two horticulture degrees and has extensive experience in landscape design and greenhouse growing. She has been in the green industry since 1998.
