BIO 1200 Students:

Below is a list of objectives for your upcoming exam.  If you understand the following information, you are ready for your test.  There will be some diagrams on the exam that you must be able to identify organs/structures on!  Don't forget to do the chapter tests at the end of chapters 9, 10, 11 and 19.   If you have any questions please call (224-0412) or e-mail me (Sue_CaleyOpsal@ivcc.edu).  Mrs. Caley Opsal

Ch. 10:  The Endocrine System

Do you know...

  1. Differences between endocrine and exocrine glands?
  2. Definitions of hormone, target organ, hypersecretion, hyposecretion, negative feedback mechanism, and positive feedback mechanism?
  3. Where the following endocrine glands/organs are located and what hormones they produce:  hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, ovaries, and testes?
  4. Functions of the following hormones:  ADH, oxytocin, FSH, LH, GH, prolactin, thyroid hormones (TH), calcitonin, PTH, aldosterone, epinephrine, norepinephrine, insulin, glucagon, testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone?
  5. Characteristics of hypersecretion or hyposecretion of GH (gigantism and dwarfism)?
  6. Signs of a person with Diabetes mellitus?

Ch. 11:  Blood (This chapter may be covered on a separate quiz given during class.  If so, it will not be on exam 3.)

  1. Major components of the plasma and what approximate percentage the plasma makes up of the total blood volume?
  2. Cells making up the formed elements and what approximate percentage they make up of the total blood volume?  
  3. Definition of hematocrit and what information this might give a physician about the blood sample?
  4. How to distiguish between an erythrocyte, leukocyte, platelet?
  5. How to distiguish between the 5 types of leukocytes (neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, eosinophil, basophil) and which are the most abundant or least abundant?
  6. Importance of hemoglobin to the red blood cell and how it is related to some forms of anemia?
  7. General functions of the cells listed in #5?
  8. Substances necessary for normal blood clotting (prothrombin, fibrinogen, fibrin threads, calcium ions, Vitamin K)?
  9. Definitions of thrombus and embolus?
  10. Characteristics of the four blood types in the ABO blood-typing system?
  11. What it means to be Rh-positive and Rh-negative?

Ch. 12:  The Circulatory (Cardiovascular) System

  1. How to identify the structures of the heart shown on pp. 275, 276 and 283 of your text?
  2. Functions of the pericardial membranes and heart valves?
  3. Definitions of systole, diastole, myocardial infarction (MI), angina pectoris, coronary bypass surgery, cardiac cycle?
  4. What causes the "lub" and "dub" heart sounds?
  5. What causes a heart murmur?
  6. Pathway of blood flow through the heart and the distinction between the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit?
  7. How the conduction system of the heart works and where the clusters of nodal cells are located?
  8. How to identify the P wave, QRS complex and T wave on an ECG and what they represent?
  9. Differences in the anatomy (the wall) and functions of arteries, capillaries and veins?

  12. Three factors that affect blood pressure?
  13. What parts of the body are served by the following vessels (aa=arteries; vv=veins):  common carotid aa, renal aa/vv, superior/inferior mesenteric aa/vv, pulmonary aa, pulmonary vv, radial aa/vv, ulnar aa/vv, femoral aa/vv, hepatic artery (there is only one), coronary aa/vv, superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, coronary sinus?
  14. Importance of the coronary arteries and the how they are affected by atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis?

Ch. 13:  The Lymphatic System and Immunity

Do you know...

    1.  Functions of the lymphatic system?
    2.  General locations and functions of these lymphatic organs:  lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, thymus, tonsils, and spleen?
    3.  Functions of the immune system?
    4.  The definition of immunity and what ways we obtain immunity ("naturally" and "artificially")?
    5.  What an autoimmune disease is?
    6.  How B cells, T cells and antibodies fight disease?
