BIO 1200 Lab Assignment
The Nervous System:  The Brain and Spinal Cord

NAME_______________________________
Due Date:____________________________

Part 1:  Locate the model of the motor neuron.  Identify the following parts of the neuron:

soma (cell body) myelin sheath node of Ranvier
axon nucleus
dendrites nissl bodies (ribosomes)

Part 2:  The Central Nervous System:  The Brain and Spinal Cord.

Using the brain models in lab, identify the following parts of the brain:

A. Divisions of Brain

1. Brain stem

a. Midbrain
b. Pons
c. Medulla oblongata (continuous with spinal cord)

2. Cerebellum

3. Diencephalon

a. Hypothalamus

Note the pituitary gland (an endocrine gland) located just below the Hypothalamus

b. Thalamus

4. Cerebrum

a. Gyri -

b. Sulci -

c. Longitudinal fissure divides cerebrum into right and left halves

d. Lobes

Frontal Temporal
Parietal Occipital

e. Cerebral cortex

f. Inner white matter

g. Functional Areas of the Cerebrum - use the colored brain to locate the following areas (write in their functions in the blanks):

Primary Motor Area - __________________________________
Primary Somatic Sensory Area - __________________________
Broca's Area - ________________________________________
Visual Cortex - _______________________________________
Primary Auditory Area - ________________________________
Primary Taste Area - ___________________________________

B.  The Ventricles:  Use the ventricles model to identify the following parts:

lateral ventricles third ventricle fourth ventricle
interventricular foramen cerebral aqueduct choroid plexus

C. The Spinal Cord:  Use the cross section of the spinal cord to locate the following parts (ask an instructor for assistance):

dura mater gray matter ("butterfly") central canal
arachnoid mater white matter subarachnoid space
pia mater spinal ("dorsal root") ganglion
