Reproductive System Lab Checklist NAME_________________________________________
BIO 1200 Due Date:________________________

Directions:  Use the models of the male and female pelvis, torsos and other lab resources to identify the following parts of the male and female reproductive system.  Don't forget to have a lab instructor sign and date your paper!

MALE:

A. Scrotum - extension of the abdominal wall that holds the testes.
B. Testes -
C. Sperm-carrying ducts leaving the testes:

1. Epididymis -
2. Vas (ductus) deferens -
3. Ejaculatory duct -
4. Urethra 末 (identify all three sections)

a. Prostatic urethra -
b. Membranous urethra -
c. Penile (spongy or cavernous) urethra-

D. Seminal vesicles (2) -
E. Prostate gland (1)-
F. Bulbourethral (Cowper's) glands (2)-
G. Penis

1) Glans penis - enlarged end of the corpus spongiosum.
2) Body (shaft) of the penis
3) Prepuce - foreskin of the penis.

H. Other structures:

1) Spermatic cord - a group of structures enclosed by a sleeve of white fibrous tissue that extends from the testis to the abdominal wall. Structures found within the spermatic cord include the vas deferens, spermatic artery, and spermatic vein.
2) Inguinal canal - passageway through the abdominal wall for the structures found within the spermatic cord.
3) Urogenital diaphragm- skeletal muscles making up the floor of the pelvis.

FEMALE:

A. Vulva (pudendum): external genitalia of the female.

1. Labia majora - two folds of skin inferior to the mons pubis.
2. Labia minora - two folds of skin medial to the labia majora.
3. Clitoris - includes the glans clitoris and the body of the clitoris; homologous to the male penis
4. Urethral orifice -
5. Hymen - extension of the epithelium of the vaginal orifice; partially closes this opening.
6. Vaginal orifice -

B) Ovaries

1. Primordial follicles 末 undeveloped follicles near the surface of the ovary. Note the oocyte surrounded by a layer of follicle cells.
2. Primary follicles 末 Note the oocyte surrounded by several layers of follicle cells, and the presence of a clear space, the zona pellucida, between the oocyte and the follicle cells.
3. Secondary follicles 末 Note the presence of pockets of follicular fluid within the follicle.
4. Tertiary (Graffian) follicle 末 This is a mature follicle. Note the oocyte, zona pellucida and antrum (large, fluid-filled space).
5. Corpus luteum - After ovulation, the ruptured follicle develops into this large, "yellow body" of follicular cells.

C. Fallopian tubes (uterine tubes; oviducts) - note the fimbriae - finger-like extensions of the proximal part of the oviduct
D. Uterus

1. Fundus - dome shaped portion above the point where the oviducts attach to the uterus.
2. Body -
3. Cervix - narrow, inferior portion of the uterus.
4. Uterine cavity -
5. Cervical canal -
6. Broad ligament - attaches uterus to either side of the pelvic cavity.
7. Round ligament - band of tissue within the broad ligament.
8. Ovarian ligament 末 attaches ovary to the posterolateral portions of the uterine wall.
9. Perimetrium - outer layer of the uterine wall.
10. Myometrium - smooth muscle of the uterine wall.
11) Endometrium - modified epithelial lining of the uterus.

E. Other structures:

1) Vagina -
2) Mammary glands -
3) Perineum - area between vaginal orifice and anal orifice.
