Nutrition Calculations for Fat (always show your work!):

Find the following information on your food label:

A.  Fat Calories per serving:  ________ C

B.  Fat grams (g) per serving:  _________ g

C.  % DV for fat ___________

To calculate Calories from fat in one serving:

____ g Fat x 9 C/g of fat = _____ C Fat

Is the number you calculated the same as the food label lists? ________

Calculate % of Fat C per serving:

______ Fat C/serving ÷ ______ Total C = _______% C from Fat

What does “% DV” mean?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandates that saturated fat grams and trans fat grams (if greater than 1.5 g/serving) are listed on the food label.  Are these fats generally considered healthy or unhealthy? Why?

B.  % DV for CHO: _______

C.  CHO Calories per serving:  ________ C

To calculate Calories from CHO in one serving:

____ g CHO x 4 C/g CHO = _____ C CHO

Is the number you calculated the same as the food label lists? ________

Calculate % of CHO C/serving:  _____ CHO C/serving ÷  ____ Total C = _____% C from CHO

Calculate the grams of starch in one serving of your product:

Total CHO ______ g - [_____ g Fiber + _____ g sugars] = ______ g starch/serving

What is the difference between a complex carbohydrates and simple sugars?

Give two examples of complex CHOs:

What is the importance of fiber?

RDA for Dietary fiber is 25 g.

RDA for CHO intake is between 45 and 65% of total Calories.

A.  Protein grams per serving:  ___________ g

B.  Protein Calories per serving:  __________ C

To calculate Calories from Protein in one serving:

____ g Protein x 4 C/g Protein = ______ C Protein

Calculate % of Protein C/serving:  _____ C Protein/serving ÷ ____ Total C = _____% C from Protein

RDA for Protein intake is 0.8 g protein/kg of bodyweight.
