CRANIAL NERVES

There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves which are attached to the inferior aspect of the brain. You are responsible for knowing the name, roman numeral, and general function of each.

No. NERVE GENERAL FUNCTIONS
I Olfactory sense of smell
II Optic sense of vision
III Oculomotor eye movements
IV Trochlear eye movements
V Trigeminal sensations of face, scalp, & teeth; chewing movements
VI Abducens eye movement
VII Facial sense of taste; facial muscle movement (expressions)
VIII Vestibulocochlear hearing; sense of balance
IX Glossopharyngeal sensations of throat, taste, swallowing movements; secretions of saliva
X Vagus sensations of throat, larynx, thoracic & abdominal organs; swallowing; voice production; slows heart rate; peristalsis
XI Accessory accessory shoulder and head movements
XII Hypoglossal tongue movements

There is a catchy little mneumonic to remember the names of the cranial nerves in order:

Oh Once One Takes The, Anatomy Final, Very Good Vacations Are Heavenly.

This one is used to remember whether the cranial nerve is Sensory (S), Motor (M), or Both (i.e. mixed; B):

Some Say Marry Money, But My Brothers Say Bad Business Marry Money.
