How old do I have to be before I can take the GED test?
You must be 18 years of age or older and have been a resident of Illinois for at least 30 days, and your high school class must have already graduated. Or you must be 17 years of age and have an official drop date from high school for a period of one year.
How do I prepare for the GED test?
Attend a class at IVCC or at an off-campus site in or near your town. E323 or call 224-0358
Do you offer night classes?
Yes. Day and night classes are available or one-to-one tutoring may be arranged to fit your schedule.
Do I have to attend GED preparation classes?
No. But, we strongly suggest completing a GED practice test at one of our GED preparation sites prior to taking the GED test. Statistically, more students are successful at passing the GED test after attending GED preparation classes.
If I decide to attend classes, how long will it take before I am ready to take the GED test?
We offer several assessment tools to determine grade level and then help you set a realistic goal for achieving your GED. The TABE test determines grade level, and the Official GED Practice test gives an idea of how you might score on the actual GED test.
How much do GED preparation classes cost?
All GED classes and the materials that you will use are provided at no cost to the student!
What subjects are covered on the GED test?
Writing skills/Essay, Social Studies, Science, Literature and Mathematics.
Do I have to take the Constitution exam?
In addition to the five GED tests, Illinois residents are required to pass a Constitution examination. You must have verification of passing the test at the time of sign-up or take the test the 2nd day of GED testing.
Is there a fee to take the GED test?
Yes. A $35 fee is due at the time you apply to take the test. This fee covers the cost of the testing, the official certificate upon completion and is good for one year from the date of application.
How do I sign up for the GED test?
You may register at the Assessment Center at IVCC or at the Regional Superintendent’s office located at 119 West Madison St. Courthouse, Room 102 in Ottawa.
Can I retake portions of the test that I did not pass?
Yes. The retest fee for each test is $5 with the exception of the Writing Skills test, which is $10. You may sign up to retake at IVCC’s Assessment Center or at the Regional Superintendent’s office.

Is getting my GED really as good as a high school diploma?
Yes. The GED is recognized nationwide by most employers and colleges as the equivalent to a high school diploma.
