CATALOG DESCRIPTION
This is the beginning course in geometry. Topics of study include: angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, congruence, similarity, area and perimeter of plane figures, and surface areas and volumes of selected solids. Emphasis is on applying knowledge of geometry relations to solve problems rather than on rigorous development of geometric relations. An individualized study approach is used. Completion of this course satisfies the geometry prerequisite for any other course.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. demonstrate a working knowledge of angles, lines and points.
2. demonstrate a working knowledge of parallel lines.
3. demonstrate a working knowledge of triangles.
4. demonstrate a working knowledge of quadrilaterals.
5. demonstrate the ability to find the area and perimeter of geometric figures.
6. demonstrate a working knowledge of circles and sectors.
7. demonstrate a working knowledge of congruence and similarity.
8. demonstrate a working knowledge of the Pythagorean Theorem.
9. demonstrate the ability to find the volume and surface area of geometric solids.

Required Text: Basic Geometry for College Students, by Allen S. Tussy & R. David Gustafson.

Course Materials:
notebook, pencil, and scientific calculator such as the TI-30X IIS

COURSE DESIGN

  1. Read each section of your book, taking notes and learning vocabulary as you go and pay close attention to the author’s examples.
  2. Work the problems in the "Study Sets" as given. These should be done neatly in a notebook and shown to a teacher by the date indicated. Homework (HW) papers should include your name and section number. Number each problem and show your work neatly. PLEASE USE PENCIL. Follow the homework template provided by the Math Learning Center personnel.
  3. Once you HW is submitted, complete the "Hand-In" sheet (HI sheet) provided by the instructor using your book and notes; submit for grading. You may begin a HI in one class and complete it in the next with the stipulation that they may not be taken home. After two class days, unfinished Hand-Ins will be graded. Check with an instructor to know your grade. All HI sheets must be done in class.

    1. If you score 14 or higher you will be allowed to continue in the chapter or take the test as appropriate.

    2. If you score 13 or lower you will need to review the sections and do the problems suggested by the instructor. Then do another form of the HI sheet.

Each HI is worth 20 points – no partial credit will be given.

HI sheets must be returned to an Instructor.

  4. You are now ready to take the test. Present a completed test request form (blue card) to an instructor to receive your test. Tests must be completed in one sitting. Turn in your test with the work shown on the test to an instructor or a student helper. (If scratch paper is used, please be neat and paper clip it to your test.)

  5. If your test is not graded before the class period ends, be sure to check with an instructor the next time you come to class. It is your responsibility to check your grade to know if you need to retake the test.

  6. Grades are posted in the grade book portion of Blackboard. To check your grades go to http://ivcc.blackboard.com/ and follow the log-in instructions below. Your username consists of the first 3 letters of your last name and last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN).  Your password is the first three digits of your SSN. Please change your password when you first log on to Blackboard.  You can change your password by clicking on Personal Information in the left menu. Then click on Change Password and follow the instructions on the screen.

  7. You must pass each test with a minimum score of 75. If you score lower than 75, you will be given appropriate review work and will be required to retake the test. You may also retake a test to raise your grade before progressing to the next chapter. The first time you take a test your maximum score is 100; the second time it is 91; the third time it is 82; the fourth time and all subsequent times it is 75.

If you need to retake a Test, you need to plan on coming in extra time to do so.

8. Completion of Geometry requires completion of all course requirements.

6 Tests 100 points each 600 points
7 Hand-Ins 6 @ 20 points each
1 @ 10 points
130 points
Final Exam 100 points 100 points
TOTAL POINTS   830 points

9.   Progress/attendance checks will be done 3 times during the summer. If you initiate the progress/attendance check on time, you will receive 5 points. Be sure to sign your grade card for each progress check.

10. If you are unable to complete all course requirements in a semester, you may withdraw from the course, re-enroll the follow semester and complete the remaining requirements. If you need advise, talk to an instructor.
